Secret to Happiness

What is the secret of happiness? Is it really a secret that is hidden and kept from us or do we hide from it feeling unworthy? Truthfully, I believe the latter to be true. Very few individuals are truly happy, having found a peace that eludes the mass majority of humans.  WE tend to live in the past or the future rarely enjoying the here and now, focusing on what will make them happy instead of seeing the people and things right in front of them that should bring joy.  And this is not to say it is always this way, but if you are honest with yourself, you knsecret-to-happinessow it applies to you at least some of the time. If not, KUDOS! You are beyond blessed!

The secret to being happy is super simply, which is why is it often missed. It is in the smile of a newborn, the hug from a child, and in the space bounded by a couple holding hands. Of course there is a list of what brings happiness as long the distance between the Earth and Jupiter, you just have to create your own and seize each instance. Grab a hold of the happiness and own it, feel the worth into your being, and don’t allow outside forces to steal it.

I have always thought that to be really happy I needed the perfect relationship, a skinny physique, an accomplished career, the best car, and lots of money in the bank. Not true! At 40 years old, happiness is having my children come tScreen-shot-2011-05-06-at-7.38.31-AMo me for advice, a call or text from a loved one out of the blue, a friend that wants to have coffee, flowers for no reason , and being content in my own skin. Not giving a crap what others think is pretty important as well.  Of course, I haven’t gotten that far yet.

What induces your lips to curl up in a smile and give your heart a leap? I encourage you to take a few moments right now to make a list and look at it each morning reminding yourself that even if life isn’t what you idealize, there are still moments of joy to be treasured. Because if you wait for happiness, you will be waiting a long time.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. I read a book called the happiness equation and this stuck with me. The key to being happy is simply to be happy first. Be completely present and grateful for where you are and open to what comes after.
